SUMMARY:National Public Lands Day @ Lake Whatcom Park with Whatcom County and Whatcom Million Trees
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with Whatcom Land Trust\, Whatcom Million Trees\, and Whatcom County for a day of stewardship at Lake Whatcom Park.\nJoin us in celebrating the lands we love on National Public Lands Day\, the nation’s largest single day of volunteer service for public lands. Volunteers will help remove invasive English ivy that is outcompeting native trees and shrubs\, and may also assist with planting native species and reseeding. As we work\, the stewardship we bring to this park becomes part of a larger\, nationwide celebration of the places we share — learn more about National Public Lands Day at npld.neefusa.org. \nPulling ivy and planting native species helps this forest filter rain\, hold soil in place\, and protect Lake Whatcom\, the drinking water source for more than 100\,000 people in Whatcom County. Healthy forest cover near the lake means cleaner water and a more resilient watershed for the wildlife and communities that depend on it. \nCome celebrate with us\, connect with the land\, meet fellow community members\, and help care for a place that benefits us all. Once you register\, our Volunteer Coordinator\, Lauren Ralbovsky\, will send additional details a few days before the event. If you have questions in the meantime\, email lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org.\nWhat to expect: Stooping\, bending\, using hand tools\, and walking up to one mile down an unpaved trail. Snacks\, water\, coffee\, and tea will be provided.\nHow to get there: Lake Whatcom Park\, 3220 Northshore Rd\, Bellingham\, WA 98226. Parking in the upper lot will be reserved for volunteers. Follow signs and staff members’ directions when you get there!\n\n  \nSite Info: \nLake Whatcom Park is a large forested property owned by Whatcom County Parks on the east side of Lake Whatcom. This property\, along with Lookout Mountain Forest Preserve\, was reconveyed from the Department of Natural Resources in 2014 with the help of Whatcom Land Trust. This large park protects forested and wetland habitat within the Lake Whatcom Watershed\, contains miles of trails open to the public\, and provides exceptional views of Lake Whatcom. Learn more. \n
