Lend a hand in restoring this critical ecosystem by helping to remove invasive species\, maintain our access trail\, and enhance riparian areas for local wildlife. We’ll also take a hike around the site to check on key aspects of the land. Whatcom Land Trust purchased the land in 2005\, protecting 1\,500 feet of forest and salmon-bearing side channels along the river. Bald eagles roost in the Reserve’s towering trees\, hunting spawning salmon below\, making this land a critical habitat. piece of the Trust’s Salmon\, Eagle\, Elk Program on the North Fork Nooksack. \n

Join the Land Trust and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association to help protect this vital habitat by removing invasive blackberry\, which is overtaking previous plantings of native trees and shrubs. \nWe can’t wait to see you out on the land! \n  \nEvent Details:\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED for this event: Sign up here! We will have tea\, coffee\, and snacks\, and all tools are provided.\nHow to get there: Parking is at Acme Elementary School\, 5200 Turkington Rd\, Acme\, WA 98220. A 2-minute shuttle ride will bring you to the restoration site. The shuttle will be available throughout the event.\n\n  \nSite Info:\nThe Catalyst Corridor lies between Landingstrip Creek and the South Fork of the Nooksack River and is home to salmon\, elk\, birds\, and other wildlife. The land used to be a poplar farm with hardly any riparian buffer (the forested area around a stream or river)\, and had a culvert blocking salmon passage\, along with large amounts of highly invasive reed canary grass. Since its protection\, years of stewardship work have helped restore the site\, and we can’t wait to build on that progress with you! \n

SUMMARY:Orca Recovery Day @ Lower Kenney Creek
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer for Orca Recovery Day!\nOrca Recovery Day is a regional day of action that aims to improve conditions for the critically endangered Southern Resident orca whales. To support their recovery\, we can volunteer to restore habitat for their food source\, Chinook salmon. Learn more about Orca Recovery at betterground.org. \nJoin Whatcom Land Trust\, Whatcom Conservation District\, and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association on October 18th at Lower Kenney Creek to get native plants in the ground to help build a riparian buffer — trees and shrubs situated along the bank of lakes\, rivers\, and streams — to keep the creek cold\, clean\, and clear enough to support healthy salmon populations. As we work\, the care we bring to this creek becomes part of a larger\, region-wide effort to restore the food source Southern Resident orcas depend on. If you have questions in the meantime\, email lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org. \n\nWhat to expect: Walking a short distance on uneven and sometimes steep ground\, bending\, stooping\, digging. Tools\, snacks\, water\, coffee\, and tea will be provided.\nHow to get there: 5862 N Fork Rd Deming\, WA 98244 From Bellingham\, take 542 East for approximately 17 miles. Turn right on Mosquito Lake Road and continue for 1 mile\, then turn left onto North Fork Road. Continue for 1 mile and pull in on the right-hand side of the road.\n\nWe highly encourage carpooling to this event\, as the fewer cars we park\, the more area we can plant with native species! You can utilize this resource to share your ride or find a ride! \n \nSite Info:\nLower Kenney Creek is a 16-acre site along a North Fork Nooksack River tributary that supports spring Chinook\, winter steelhead\, coho\, chum\, and pink salmon\, along with eagles and other wildlife. In 2025\, Whatcom Land Trust permanently conserved this land\, opening the door for partners to carry out long-term restoration work. Since then\, partners like NSEA\, Whatcom Conservation District\, and Whatcom County have worked together to enhance this critical habitat. That same year\, a culvert blocking salmon passage was removed\, and a new bridge was constructed to make way for a wider\, natural channel. Now\, salmon can travel up the restored creek\, with plenty of large woody debris in place to create natural stream habitat as they return to spawn. Seven acres of grass field are being converted into streamside riparian forest (5\,000 native plants and trees) with the help of volunteers like you! \n  \nWatch and learn about the collaboration protecting and restoring Lower Kenney Creek. \n \n  \n \n  \nThis work is far from finished\, and there’s still plenty of work to do to build a resilient future for Kenney Creek. We can’t wait to see you out on the land!

Parking information will be included in the pre-event email. \n  \nSite Info: \nThis special place was Whatcom Land Trust’s second protected property\, donated by Ruth Kelsey in 1992. Since then\, the Land Trust has expanded the reserve by adding a 51-acre parcel in 2024\, which completes protection of the Lake Terrell shoreline through its connection with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife lands. Today\, this protected land provides habitat for beaver\, songbirds\, coho\, and many other native wildlife species. While important stewardship work has already taken place\, there are still many opportunities for restoration. \n \n
