SUMMARY:Invasive Species Removal Field Friday @ Elk Flats
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special day at the beautiful Elk Flats! This 80-acre conservation site is difficult to access\, making this Field Friday a rare chance to explore and care for this unique landscape. Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or new to stewardship work\, this is a great opportunity to make a meaningful impact while experiencing a place few people ever get to see. We look forward to having you join us! \nRegistration is REQUIRED for this event: This event is FULL. Email lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org to get on the waitlist. \nOnce you register\, additional details will be sent by our Volunteer Coordinator\, Lauren Ralbovsky\, a week to 4 days before the event. If you have questions in the meantime\, email lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org. \nWhat to expect: Walking a long distance through unmaintained trails on steep\, uneven ground\, cutting and digging blackberry and other invasive plants\, pruning plants back from the trail\, and pulling roots. \nHow to get there: Field Fridays start at the Whatcom Land Trust office. 412 N Commercial St\, Bellingham\, WA 98225 \n  \nSite Info: Elk Flats is approximately 80 acres of forestland along the South Fork of the Nooksack River in Skagit County. Whatcom Land Trust protected the land in the early 2010s. Before its protection\, the land experienced logging and other uses that left it in need of restoration. Today\, ongoing stewardship focuses on improving habitat for fish and wildlife and supporting the health of the river system. \nLearn more about Field Fridays: Here

SUMMARY:Invasive Removal @ Maple Creek Reach with Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association
DESCRIPTION:Join Whatcom Land Trust and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association for a day of stewardship at Maple Creek Reach. This stunning protected land has undergone incredible restoration efforts over the past 20 years\, and now it needs your help! With breathtaking views along the North Fork of the Nooksack River and frequent eagle sightings\, this site is a volunteer favorite. Come make a lasting impact by helping us remove invasive Scotch broom that is taking over previous years’ plantings. We will have tea\, coffee\, and snacks\, and all tools are provided. \nWe can’t wait to see you out on the land! \n  \nRegister: Here (Please register for this event so that we can bring enough shovels and snacks!) \nOnce you register\, additional details will be sent by our Volunteer Coordinator\, Lauren Ralbovsky\, 3–4 days before the event\, including where to meet. If you have questions in the meantime\, email lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org. \nWhat to expect: Walking on uneven ground\, digging using a shovel\, carrying\, and using heavy tools. \nHow to get there: Parking is at Kendall Elementary School at 7547 Kendall Rd\, Maple Falls\, WA 98266. A shuttle will run throughout the event to get volunteers to and from the restoration site\, roughly 5 minutes from the parking. \n  \nSite Info: After years of agricultural and dairy use\, restoration efforts at Maple Creek Reach began in 1998\, led by the current landowners to support the critical streamside habitat. Building on that work\, Whatcom Land Trust started protecting the land in 2003\, and by 2010\, 111 acres were permanently conserved. Since then\, ongoing stewardship and restoration efforts have continued to return Maple Creek Reach to a forested wetland that supports salmon\, bald eagles\, and other native wildlife. This stunning stretch of protected land along the Chuckanut Mountains offers a rare opportunity to support early stewardship efforts at a site not yet open to the public. \nDuring this Field Friday\, volunteers will focus on removing invasive species and maintaining the trail that will one day provide public access to the point. This work is critical to restoring native habitat\, improving ecosystem health\, and preparing the site for future community use. We will have snacks and tools available. \nWe hope to see you out on the land! \n  \nRegistration is REQUIRED for this event: Sign up here! Capacity is limited to 20 volunteers. \nOnce you register\, additional details will be sent by our Volunteer Coordinator\, Lauren Ralbovsky\, a week to 4 days before the event. If you have questions in the meantime\, email lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org. \nWhat to expect: Walking along a trail for around 4 miles\, pulling invasive species\, and cutting plants. \nHow to get there: We will be meeting on site at Governors Point. Parking details will be shared closer to the date and after you register. Parking will be limited at this site\, so we strongly encourage volunteers to carpool if possible. Conserved through a partnership between a local landowner and Whatcom Land Trust\, the site will eventually be transferred to Whatcom County Parks\, with the Land Trust holding a conservation easement to ensure its long-term protection. This landscape includes forested uplands\, rocky shoreline\, and important habitat for marine and terrestrial species. Ongoing stewardship is helping prepare the area for future public access while protecting its ecological integrity for generations to come. To learn more about Governors Point\, visit here.

SUMMARY:Finding the Rhythm in Nature Photography Workshop with Greg Green
DESCRIPTION:Join wildlife biologist and photographer Greg Green for a two-day workshop exploring how to see patterns in nature and capture compelling\, story-driven images in the field. \nIn this workshop\, Greg blends his expertise in biology and creativity in photography to expand attendees’ photographic vision and better “see” the wonderful photo opportunities that surround us by incorporating patterns and rhythms in nature. You’ll learn to capture images that tell a story of the natural world in a fresh and compelling way. \nParticipants should bring their own camera and have a basic familiarity with its use. The workshop will focus on DSLR cameras with interchangeable lenses\, rather than smartphone photography. \nWhat to Expect: \nFriday\, June 5th from 6 PM – 8 PM: The primary workshop is a 2-hour lecture (with a break) in the public event room at the ReStore in Bellingham. \nSaturday\, June 6th at 9 AM (optional): We’ll meet at the Fenton Nature Reserve to practice the lecture points in the field and enjoy a morning of photographing a variety of subjects. Trails may be slippery if wet — bring raingear\, especially if planning to get low to the ground. \nTickets: Here \nJoin us for the Friday evening presentation only\, or add the optional Saturday field session at Fenton Nature Reserve. Spots in the field are limited to 12\, so grab your ticket early. \nAbout Greg Green: \nGregory A. Green is a career wildlife biologist and ecology instructor at Western Washington University. He is also a nature photographer and writer. His photography has been featured in BirdWatching Magazine\, Popular Photography\, Adventures Northwest Magazine\, Audubon calendars and most recently one of his photos was awarded an Honorable Mention in the National Wildlife Federation’s 2025 photo contest.
