SUMMARY:What's the Point? @ Point Whitehorn
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “What’s the Point?” a free\, family-friendly exploration of Point Whitehorn Marine Reserve. Investigate the shoreline with expert naturalists\, attend fascinating talks on local ecology and wildlife\, and connect with organizations dedicated to protecting our coastal treasures. This year the Whatcom MRC will have an intertidal exploration table at the shoreline\, where you can examine live tide‑pool species up close and learn how these remarkable organisms survive and thrive in dynamic coastal habitats. It’s a perfect day for curious minds of all ages to learn\, explore\, and get inspired—please remember to leave your four-legged friends at home! \n  \nPresentation Schedule \n10:10 am: Plants\, birds\, and ecology with Pam Borso and Greg Green (leaves from parking lot). \n12:00 pm: Geological history tour with Doug Clark (meet at the beach). \n12:30 pm: Natural beach processes with Keeley Chiasson (meet at the beach). \n  \nParking: Please park at 7039 Jackson Rd.\, Blaine\, and take the shuttle to Point Whitehorn Park. The first shuttle leaves the parking lot at 9:45 am\, and the last shuttle leaves the park at 1:15 pm. There are minimal parking spots available at the park. \n  \nAccessibility: The park has an ADA accessible ¾ mile walk (packed gravel path) to viewpoints\, and there is a 0.1-mile non-ADA accessible walk down to the beach. DESCRIPTION:Join Whatcom Land Trust staff for a day of invasive species removal in the incredible floodplains at Rutsatz Salmon Reserve. \nThis beautiful stretch of protected land offers a rewarding opportunity to care for a dynamic floodplain ecosystem while spending time in a truly special place. During this Field Friday\, volunteers will focus on removing invasive Scotch broom and butterfly bush using tools like weed wrenches. This work is essential to reducing competition for native plants\, improving habitat for wildlife\, and supporting the long-term health of the floodplain. We’ll hike out together to the work area and spend the day restoring this important landscape. \nWe will have snacks and tools available. DESCRIPTION:Join Whatcom Land Trust staff for a full day of stewardship at North Fork Eagle\, located along the North Fork of the Nooksack River near Welcome. \nThis Field Friday offers an opportunity to care for a dynamic floodplain while working along a trail that winds through a beautiful forested landscape. Volunteers will focus on trail maintenance and invasive species removal\, including Himalayan blackberry\, holly\, and other invasive plants. This work helps restore native habitat\, improve access\, and support the health of the floodplain ecosystem. This stretch of river is an important spawning area for chum salmon\, which in turn support large numbers of bald eagles that feed and roost nearby. Located near the 5 Cedars community and adjacent to Nooksack Indian Tribe lands\, this area plays an important role in supporting wildlife habitat and the health of the surrounding watershed.
