While this property will eventually be owned by Whatcom County Parks\, Whatcom Land Trust will hold a Conservation Easement to ensure its long-term protection. Though it won’t be officially open to the public for a few more years\, we’re currently working to restore its ecosystem to a healthier state. This Field Friday\, we’ll focus on removing invasive holly scattered throughout the property and clearing English ivy from trees. We’ll explore sections of the trail while tackling this important work. DESCRIPTION:What’s The Point is a free\, family-friendly event featuring low tide beach tours\, community booths and more at Point Whitehorn Park! \nBeach naturalists will be there to help you learn about tidal habitats and the critters who call this place home. We’ll hold scheduled talks to learn about different aspects of the area\, and local partners will share more ways to get involved in protecting and exploring this area. Please leave your dogs at home! \nWe hold this day of beach fun each year during one of the extreme low tides around the summer solstice. This makes for some of the best beachcombing and wildlife sightings you can get. \nEvent Details:  \nNature talk @ 10:15am: Meet Pam Borso with North Cascades Audubon Society at the start of the ADA accessible trail (by the parking lot) and take a walk back through the park towards the beach to learn about birds\, plants\, and the ecosystem of the area. \nGeology talk @ 11:00-11:30am: Meet Doug Clark\, a geology professor at WWU\, down at the beach (base of the stairs)  to learn about the geology of Point Whitehorn! This interpretive talk will be around half an hour.

SUMMARY:Governors Point Bird Watching Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join members of Whatcom Land Trust and the North Cascades Audubon Society for a birdwatching-focused stroll through the wondrous nature of Governors Point before it opens to the public. \nWe are hosting this event on both June 15th and June 16th from 10am – 2pm. It will be the same event\, so pick the date that works the best for you – or sign up for both if you want to have double the chance of seeing the best birds! \nThe Land Trust has been working for decades to protect this truly unique community resource – the last undeveloped and unprotected shoreline on Chuckanut Bay – and through a collaboration with property owner Randy Bishop\, 98 acres of Governors Point were donated and protected forever as a public nature reserve. Walk along the coast and through mature forests to see stunning bayside views and spot migratory and resident birds such as woodpeckers\, warblers\, and seabirds that call this unique treasure their home. \nDue to limited parking\, participants will vanpool to Governors Point from the Whatcom Museum and enjoy a self-brought picnic lunch before returning back in the early afternoon. Take advantage of this special opportunity to preview Governors Point before it opens to the public! There is a max of 14 participants per day\, so be sure to purchase your ticket before they sell out. \nThe path at Governors Point is mostly paved. If you have any questions about mobility\, please reach out. The vanpool is not wheelchair accessible.

Potential sites include Fenton Nature Reserve\, California Creek Estuary\, Point Whitehorn Marine Reserve\, and/or Nesset Farm. Expect ample opportunities for photography while minimizing travel time. \nWe will conclude the field day by returning to Whatcom Land Trust’s office in the afternoon to participate in a constructive photo critique session led by Greg and Rich. Although thousands of acres have been protected over that time\, the vision has remained the same–to protect Whatcom County’s abundant tapestry of lakes\, rivers\, farms\, forests\, meadows and wetlands\, all of which are vital to our way of life and sense of place.\n\nThere are many wonderful projects to celebrate from the last four decades – Stimpson Family Nature Reserve\, Galbraith Mountain\, Teddy Bear Cove\, Canyon Lake Forest\, Alluvial Farms\, Skookum Creek Reach and part of the Chuckanuts\, to name just a few. DESCRIPTION:The Fenton Nature Reserve is an 80-acre property with a lovely mix of forest\, wetlands\, and open fields. This property is full of activity as fish swim up Haynie Creek\, the eagles come down to munch and the beavers are busy making their dams. As wonderful as this property is\, the ecosystem could be improved through removing invasive species and made better for all the wonderful wildlife. For this Field Friday\, we will be focused on removing invasive holly and blackberry. We will also be doing a walk around Fenton for our annual site visit.
