Join us in making a lasting impact by planting native trees and shrubs that restore streamside habitat. Coffee and snacks will be provided\, along with all the tools you’ll need! \nWhat to Expect: Digging holes\, planting\, and walking on uneven ground. \nRSVP: Register Here! \nAddress: 5862 N Fork Rd\, Deming\, WA 98244 \nHow to get there: From Bellingham\, take 542 East for approximately 17 miles. SUMMARY:Field Friday Planting Day and Site Visit @ Saxon Riparian Corridor
DESCRIPTION:This Field Friday\, we’ll focus on planting native trees and shrubs to improve habitat that benefits salmon\, birds\, and other native wildlife. This 8.266-acre site—roughly the size of eight soccer fields—protects approximately 600 feet of critical shoreline along the South Fork Nooksack River. Last year\, Whatcom Land Trust removed a structurally unsound building from the site and prepared the area for new plantings. Watch the episode of Stewardship Diaries that covers the Saxon demolition. Enjoy a day by the river while planting in the newly cleared areas and along the riverbanks to increase biodiversity and help build a more resilient ecosystem! \nWhat to Expect: Bending\, stooping\, using tools to dig and cut\, installing protective measures around the new plants (blue tubes)\, and walking on uneven ground. \nHow to Get There: We will meet at the Whatcom Land Trust Office at 8 am and carpool from there. \nRSVP: THIS EVENT IS FULL. Email Lauren (lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org) to get on the waitlist! \nAdditional details about the day will be shared the week before the Field Friday.

SUMMARY:Planting Work Party @ California Creek Estuary with Whatcom Conservation District and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association
DESCRIPTION:Join the Land Trust\, Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association\, and Whatcom Conservation District to make a lasting impact by planting new trees and caring for last year’s plantings at California Creek Estuary. \nAt the south end of Drayton Harbor near Blaine\, the California Creek Estuary provides critical refuge for salmon\, forage fish\, and migrating shorebirds. For more than five years\, Whatcom Land Trust has worked to protect and restore the sensitive coastal wetlands and forests surrounding the area\, helping deliver clean\, clear water to Drayton Harbor. Over time\, hundreds of Land Trust volunteers have removed acres of invasive species and planted native trees. Last year’s Orca Recovery Day was also held here to improve habitat for Chinook Salmon\, the primary food source for Washington’s Resident Orcas. Most recently\, the Land Trust removed a structurally unsound building that threatened to pollute the area and degrade the estuary’s habitat. \nSee you on the land! \nRSVP: Here \nWhat to Expect: Bending\, stooping\, using tools to dig and cut\, installing protective measures around the new plants (blue tubes)\, and walking on uneven ground. \nDriving Directions: Parking will be at Blaine Middle School\, with a shuttle to the work party site. \nFor questions\, email: lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org

The shuttle will be available throughout the event. \n  \nSite Info: Catalyst Reserve lies between Landingstrip Creek and the South Fork of the Nooksack River and is home to salmon\, elk\, birds\, and other wildlife. The land used to be a poplar farm with hardly any riparian buffer (the forested area around a stream or river)\, and had a culvert blocking salmon passage\, along with large amounts of highly invasive reed canary grass. Since its protection\, years of stewardship work have helped restore the site\, and we can’t wait to build on that progress with you!
