SUMMARY:Orca Recovery Day @ Lower Kenney Creek
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer for Orca Recovery Day!\nOrca Recovery Day is a regional day of action that aims to improve conditions for the critically endangered Southern Resident orca whales. To support their recovery\, we can volunteer to restore habitat for their food source\, Chinook salmon. Learn more about Orca Recovery at betterground.org. \nJoin Whatcom Land Trust\, Whatcom Conservation District\, and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association on October 17th at Lower Kenney Creek to get native plants in the ground to help build a riparian buffer — trees and shrubs situated along the bank of lakes\, rivers\, and streams — to keep the creek cold\, clean\, and clear enough to support healthy salmon populations. As we work\, the care we bring to this creek becomes part of a larger\, region-wide effort to restore the food source Southern Resident orcas depend on. Once we’ve planted the area\, we’ll mulch the plants and remove invasive species that might hinder their growth. \n  \nEvent Details:\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED for this event: Sign up here!\n\nOnce you register\, our Volunteer Coordinator\, Lauren Ralbovsky\, will send additional details a few days before the event. If you have questions in the meantime\, email lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org. \n\nWhat to expect: Walking a short distance on uneven and sometimes steep ground\, bending\, stooping\, digging. Tools\, snacks\, water\, coffee\, and tea will be provided.\nHow to get there: 5862 N Fork Rd Deming\, WA 98244 From Bellingham\, take 542 East for approximately 17 miles. Turn right on Mosquito Lake Road and continue for 1 mile\, then turn left onto North Fork Road. Continue for 1 mile and pull in on the right-hand side of the road.\n\nWe highly encourage carpooling to this event\, as the fewer cars we park\, the more area we can plant with native species! You can utilize this resource to share your ride or find a ride! \n \nSite Info:\nLower Kenney Creek is a 16-acre site along a North Fork Nooksack River tributary that supports spring Chinook\, winter steelhead\, coho\, chum\, and pink salmon\, along with eagles and other wildlife. In 2025\, Whatcom Land Trust permanently conserved this land\, opening the door for partners to carry out long-term restoration work. Since then\, partners like NSEA\, Whatcom Conservation District\, and Whatcom County have worked together to enhance this critical habitat. That same year\, a culvert blocking salmon passage was removed\, and a new bridge was constructed to make way for a wider\, natural channel. Now\, salmon can travel up the restored creek\, with plenty of large woody debris in place to create natural stream habitat as they return to spawn. Seven acres of grass field are being converted into streamside riparian forest (5\,000 native plants and trees) with the help of volunteers like you! \n  \nWatch and learn about the collaboration protecting and restoring Lower Kenney Creek. \n \n  \n \n  \nThis work is far from finished\, and there’s still plenty of work to do to build a resilient future for Kenney Creek. We can’t wait to see you out on the land!

SUMMARY:Make a Difference Day @ Cloud Mountain Farm Center with Growing Veterans
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with Whatcom Land Trust and Growing Veterans for Make a Difference Day at Cloud Mountain Farm.\nJoin us for Make a Difference Day\, a national day of service that brings people together to give back to their communities. Volunteers will help steward the salmon-bearing streams that run through this amazing farmland\, working alongside Growing Veterans to remove invasive blackberry from the land near the stream\, which will help stabilize the banks and filter water. This work will ensure the area is in great shape as the farm transitions to its future permanent owners. \nWe highly encourage carpooling to this event. The fewer cars we park\, the more room we have to plant native species! You can share your ride or find one through this carpool resource. \n  \nEvent Details:\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED for this event: Sign up here! If you’re interested in taking fruit home\, please bring a box or tote bag.\nHow to get there: Cloud Mountain Farm\, 6906 Goodwin Rd\, Everson\, WA 98247.\n\n  \nSite Info:\nCloud Mountain Farm has served Whatcom County’s agricultural community since its founding in 1978\, providing education and training for new and beginning farmers along with infrastructure that supports local food systems. Whatcom Land Trust recently accepted interim ownership of the 19-acre farm from Sustainable Connections\, with plans to permanently protect the land through a conservation easement that will limit development and place habitat protections along its stream. During this interim period\, the Trust is also supporting the farm’s processing\, aggregation\, distribution\, and storage services\, which local farms\, food banks\, and community organizations rely on. The Trust will then work with the Whatcom Community Foundation to find a long-term owner committed to keeping the farmland in agricultural use.

This area hosts wetlands\, forests\, meadows\, and streams. With your help\, we can continue building a resilient ecosystem for wildlife and future generations to enjoy. Come prepared to walk around some of the reserve to check out key aspects of the land. Exact location and carpooling details will be included in the pre-event email. \n  \nSite Info: \nThis special place was Whatcom Land Trust’s second protected property\, donated by Ruth Kelsey in 1992. Since then\, the Land Trust has expanded the reserve by adding a 51-acre parcel in 2024\, which completes protection of the Lake Terrell shoreline through its connection with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife lands. Today\, this protected land provides habitat for beaver\, songbirds\, coho\, and many other native wildlife species. While important stewardship work has already taken place\, there are still many opportunities for restoration. \n \n
