DESCRIPTION:Join Whatcom Land Trust for a day of trail clearing and invasive species removal at Governors Point. This stunning stretch of protected land along the Chuckanut Mountains offers a rare opportunity to support early stewardship efforts at a site not yet open to the public. \nDuring this Field Friday\, volunteers will focus on removing invasive species and maintaining the trail that will one day provide public access to the point. This work is critical to restoring native habitat\, improving ecosystem health\, and preparing the site for future community use. Your efforts will help care for this special place while making it more accessible for generations to come. We will have snacks and tools available. \nWe hope to see you out on the land! \n  \nRegistration is REQUIRED for this event: Sign up here! Capacity is limited to 20 volunteers. \nOnce you register\, additional details will be sent by our Volunteer Coordinator\, Lauren Ralbovsky\, a week to 4 days before the event. If you have questions in the meantime\, email lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org. \nWhat to expect: Walking along a trail for around 4 miles\, pulling invasive species\, and cutting plants. \nHow to get there: We will be meeting on site at Governors Point. Parking details will be shared closer to the date and after you register. Parking will be limited at this site\, so we strongly encourage volunteers to carpool if possible. Find a carpool here. \n  \nSite Info: Governors Point is a 98-acre stretch of protected land along the Chuckanut shoreline\, one of the last remaining undeveloped stretches of coastline in Whatcom County. Conserved through a partnership between a local landowner and Whatcom Land Trust\, the site will eventually be transferred to Whatcom County Parks\, with the Land Trust holding a conservation easement to ensure its long-term protection. This landscape includes forested uplands\, rocky shoreline\, and important habitat for marine and terrestrial species. SUMMARY:Finding the Rhythm in Nature Photography Workshop with Greg Green
DESCRIPTION:Join wildlife biologist and photographer Greg Green for a two-day workshop exploring how to see patterns in nature and capture compelling\, story-driven images in the field. \nIn this workshop\, Greg blends his expertise in biology and creativity in photography to expand attendees’ photographic vision and better “see” the wonderful photo opportunities that surround us by incorporating patterns and rhythms in nature. You’ll learn to capture images that tell a story of the natural world in a fresh and compelling way. \nParticipants should bring their own camera and have a basic familiarity with its use. The workshop will focus on DSLR cameras with interchangeable lenses\, rather than smartphone photography. \nWhat to Expect: \nFriday\, June 5th from 6 PM – 8 PM: The primary workshop is a 2-hour lecture (with a break) in the public event room at the ReStore in Bellingham. \nSaturday\, June 6th at 9 AM (optional): We’ll meet at the Fenton Nature Reserve to practice the lecture points in the field and enjoy a morning of photographing a variety of subjects. Trails may be slippery if wet — bring raingear\, especially if planning to get low to the ground. \nTickets: Here \nJoin us for the Friday evening presentation only\, or add the optional Saturday field session at Fenton Nature Reserve. Spots in the field are limited to 12\, so grab your ticket early. \nAbout Greg Green: \nGregory A. Green is a career wildlife biologist and ecology instructor at Western Washington University. He is also a nature photographer and writer. His photography has been featured in BirdWatching Magazine\, Popular Photography\, Adventures Northwest Magazine\, Audubon calendars and most recently one of his photos was awarded an Honorable Mention in the National Wildlife Federation’s 2025 photo contest. He has also taught photography workshops as part of the Wings Over Water birding festival and the Kenmore Camera event series\, and recently published the book Wild Lives with Art Wolfe\, highlighting the state of the world’s wildlife through photography and essays.

DESCRIPTION:Join Whatcom Land Trust\, Whatcom County\, and the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition (WMBC) in celebrating National Trails Day at Lake Whatcom Park! This well-loved community park offers miles of forested trails\, scenic lake views\, and important habitat for wildlife. Together\, we’ll spend the day caring for the trails that connect people to this special place. \nVolunteers will help maintain and improve the trail system through brushing (clearing back overgrown vegetation along the trail corridor)\, tread work (reshaping and reinforcing the trail surface for better drainage and durability)\, and general upkeep to support safe access while protecting surrounding habitat. Whether you’re an experienced trail builder or brand new to stewardship\, this is a great opportunity to give back\, learn new skills\, and spend time outdoors with a passionate community. \nTools and lunch are provided. This work helps restore native habitat\, improve access\, and support the health of the floodplain ecosystem. This stretch of river is an important spawning area for chum salmon\, which in turn support large numbers of bald eagles that feed and roost nearby.
