SUMMARY:Field Friday Removing Butterfly Bush and Scotch Broom @ Rutsatz Salmon Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Join Whatcom Land Trust staff for a day of invasive species removal in the incredible floodplains at Rutsatz Salmon Reserve. \nThis beautiful stretch of protected land offers a rewarding opportunity to care for a dynamic floodplain ecosystem while spending time in a truly special place. During this Field Friday\, volunteers will focus on removing invasive Scotch broom and butterfly bush using tools like weed wrenches. This work is essential to reducing competition for native plants\, improving habitat for wildlife\, and supporting the long-term health of the floodplain. We’ll hike out together to the work area and spend the day restoring this important landscape. \nWe will have snacks and tools available. We hope to see you out on the land! \n  \nRegistration is REQUIRED for this event: This event is FULL. If you would like to be put on the waitlist\, please email jennifer@whatcomlandtrust.org. \nOnce you register\, additional details will be sent by our Volunteer Coordinator\, Lauren Ralbovsky\, a week to 4 days before the event. If you have questions in the meantime\, email lauren.r@whatcomlandtrust.org. \nWhat to expect: Walking up to 3 miles on uneven ground\, navigating steep sections of trail\, carrying heavy tools\, bending\, stooping\, and digging. \nHow to get there: Field Fridays start at the Whatcom Land Trust office. 412 N Commercial St\, Bellingham\, WA 98225 \n  \nSite info: Rutsatz Salmon Reserve is a protected stretch of land between the North Fork of the Nooksack River and Rutsatz Road. This diverse landscape includes an expansive floodplain\, young forest\, and active agricultural fields\, providing important habitat for salmon\, bald eagles\, and other wildlife. Ongoing stewardship supports the health of the river system and helps maintain this vital habitat for future generations. \n

DESCRIPTION:Just south of Bellingham\, where the forests of Chuckanut Mountain meet the Salish Sea\, lies one of the most extraordinary pieces of land in Whatcom County. Governors Point is a 98-acre coastal peninsula with nearly 9\,500 feet of marine shoreline along Chuckanut\, Pleasant\, and Samish Bays—and for decades\, many of us have admired it from the water or glimpsed it from the road. \nNow\, thanks to years of community commitment and advocacy\, and a remarkable donation from landowner Randy Bishop\, those 98 acres are protected forever as a future nature reserve. This is one of the last remaining undeveloped coastal forest habitats on the Salish Sea. \nThis summer\, we’re excited to invite the public for guided tours to preview the Governors Point trail before public access is established. Whether you come for the birds\, the beaches\, the sunset\, or simply to be among the first to walk these trails\, we hope you’ll join us! Governors Point is not currently open to the public outside of guided tours. \n  \nTour 4:  \nOne of the best ways to experience a place is to watch the sun go down over it. On this tour well hike a couple of miles of quiet\, forested trails before emerging at the beach just in time for the sunset—then make our way back to the cars before dark. Expect narrow trails\, some steep sections\, and some stair climbing. Led by our Outreach and Events Coordinator\, Kendra Schmiedeskamp. \n  \nTOUR FULL.
